How to apply for a DMV Traffic Violator School (TVS) Instructor’s License

A school employee licensed by the DMV to instruct traffic violators.

1. Preparation

  • Familiarize yourself with the requirements and processes.
  • Review the TVS Instructor Application Checklist (OL 710A) for a complete list of requirements.

Gather the necessary documents and forms

Necessary documents:

a. Application Forms:

  • TVS Instructor Application Checklist(OL 710A)
  • Application for a Traffic Violator School Operator and Instructor Permit(OL 710)

b. If NOT submitted with a TVS owner application:

  • Application for Professional Licensure Personal History Questionnaire, Part B(OL 29B)
  • Live Scan Service Request [yellow copy](DMV 8016)

c. Examination:

  • Proof of having passed the written TVS Instructor Examination (Exemption: if the applicant has passed the TVS Operator Examination).

d. Verification of education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

e. Recognition of employment:

  • Letters of acknowledgment of employment from each school.

3. DMV Investigation

Upon receipt of a license application accompanied by the appropriate fee, the DMV will conduct a thorough investigation of the information provided. This process is expected to take up to 120 days.

4. Submit the application and documents

  • Once you have completed the forms and gathered all required documents, schedule an appointment at a local DMV inspector’s office.
  • Present your documentation and associated fees during the appointment.
  • Complete the written test at the DMV inspector’s office. Note: You have three attempts to pass the written exam.
  • We recommend that you keep a copy of all documents for your records.

5. 5. Timetable for implementation

Be sure to complete your application within one year. Otherwise, you will need to submit a new application with all exams and fees.

6. Fees

  • Original application or non-refundable reinstatement fee of $50.
  • 1$ family support program fee.
  • Examination fee of $16.00.
  • 15 fee for duplicate or replacement license (if applicable).
  • License transfer fee of $25 (if applicable).

7. TVS Instructor Examination

The written examination will cover the following topics

  • Traffic laws.
  • Safe driving practices.
  • Safe operation of motor vehicles.
  • Knowledge of teaching methods and techniques.

Note: This examination is required every three years. Otherwise, applicants must submit DMV approval letter(s) totaling at least 18 hours of qualifying continuing professional education provided in the previous three-year period (per Citation 11).

Exemption: If the applicant has passed the TVS operator exam.
